Orthodox Western Saints for Today

Pre-Schism Saints of the Orthodox Roman Patriarchate*
12th June, (30th May O.S.):

  • ANASTASIUS, a convert from Arianism who was consecrated Bishop of Pavia in A.D. 668, with a zealous dedication to the purity of the Faith.   He reposed A.D. 680, and is often called Anastasius II to distinguish him from one of his predecessors.
  • EXUPERANTIUS, the Bishop of Ravenna from A.D. 398 until his repose A.D. 418.
  • FELIX I, Pope of Rome from A.D. 269 until his repose A.D. 274.   He was the first to condemn the heresy of Paul of Samosata, and may have been martyred.
  • GABINUS AND CRISPULUS, Protomartyrs of Sardinia.   They suffered in Torres where they had preached the Gospel under Hadrian circa A.D. 130.
  • GAMO, an eighth century monk and later Abbot of Brétigny near Noyon.
  • HUBERT (HUGBERT) OF BRETIGNY, despite family opposition, he became a monk at Brétigny near Noyon at the age of twelve. He reposed circa A.D. 714.
  • MADELGISILUS (MAUGUILLE), a disciple of St. Fursey (16th January), who, after some years of monastic life at St. Riquier, went to live as a hermit with St Pulgan near Monstrelet.   He reposed circa A.D. 655.
  • VENANTIUS, the elder brother of St. Honoratus (16th January), founder of Lérins.   After living as hermit on an island near Cannes, both travelled to the East to learn the monastic life.   St. Venantius reposed circa A.D. 400.
  • WALSTAN, a farm labourer in Taverham and Costessey in England, who was renowned for his charity to all in need.   He reposed A.D. 1016.

* - Prior to the Schism the Patriarchate of Rome was Orthodox and fully in communion with the Orthodox Church.   As Saint John of Shanghai and San Francisco +1966 said "The West was Orthodox for a thousand years, and her venerable Liturgy is far older than any of her heresies."
